“Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” CS Lewis
Do you agree with CS Lewis? Here at Greater Hartford Wellness, we strongly believe in maintaining ethics and integrity in all aspects of our lives. These concepts are closely related so let’s look at their individual definitions before diving into what they mean to us at Greater Hartford Wellness.
What are ethics? Ethics are: “moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.”
What is integrity? Integrity is: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.”
Put simply, ethics looks at the big moral picture while integrity is focused on personal characteristics. For instance, many professions have a code of ethics to which its members are bound. These codes were adopted to put forth the type of conduct that is and is not acceptable to these professionals. Ethics principles are found everywhere, but their shared purpose is to set standards for what is and is not considered moral behavior or activity by a group of people.
What do ethics & integrity mean to us? It’s important that we uphold high ethical standards because we want to make sure that the relationship between you and our clinicians is therapeutic. One of the pillars of a positive therapeutic relationship is trust. In psychotherapy, trust is founded on the maintenance of your confidentiality and privacy. Your private information is never shared without your consent (that’s why we ask you to fill out releases) and we take measures to secure your protected health information so that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Beyond these basic tenets of psychotherapy practice, we are committed to being upfront and honest with you while keeping your best interests at heart, respecting your boundaries and time, and helping you to live the life you want.
Practicing ethics & integrity
To live with integrity is to know your values and exemplify those values everyday. At GHW, we strive to express our values in our daily lives and our April calendar has ideas for you to consider about living a life with integrity.
